For credits, costs are based on the number of tokens processed (words/characters). Self-hosted subscriptions work with time-window-based usage units; external provider models are always billed through credits.

The API uses the same credit balance as the chat. If an active self-hosted subscription includes API access, an API key can optionally run against the subscription time window instead of credits.
